    Death-in-Service

Under the defined benefit component of the Hybrid Retirement Plan, a death-in-service benefit is a payment of any member contributions and interest in their defined benefit member contribution account to their named beneficiary, to their spouse, natural or legally adopted minor child or parent in the event of their death as an active member (while they are in service). The benefit may be a lump-sum payment, a monthly benefit or both. This payment is in addition to any VRS group life insurance benefits a member may have.
